Originally designated for Indian settlers, this building features an intriguing architectural element: two distinct knockers placed on the doors at each side; one on the right for men and the other on the left for women. This design was employed to indicate whether a male or female visitor was at the door, allowing the occupants to prepare appropriately for their guest. This method not only preserved cultural norms and etiquette of the time but also reflected societal gender roles deeply ingrained in the community’s daily interactions and social structure. Over the years, this unique characteristic of the building has stood as a testament to the customs and living arrangements of the early Indian settlers in the area.
