National Museum of History of Azerbaijan

The National Museum of History of Azerbaijan, situated at 4 Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev Street in Baku, stands as a monumental repository of the nation’s heritage. This prestigious institution, housed in the former mansion of the oil magnate Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, was established in 1920, making it one of the oldest museums in Azerbaijan.

Designed by Polish architect Józef Gosławski, the mansion is an exquisite example of Italian Renaissance architecture, featuring elaborate decorations and a sumptuous interior.

This architectural jewel was transformed into a museum by a decision of the Soviet authorities to preserve and showcase the diverse history of Azerbaijan from ancient to modern times.

The museum’s extensive collection, which includes over 300,000 artifacts, provides a detailed narrative of the Azerbaijani people through its expansive array of exhibits arranged in chronological order. These range from prehistoric archaeological finds to items from the medieval period of Azerbaijani history, such as coin collections, weapons, manuscripts, and decorative arts. The museum also offers insight into the more recent past, including the Russian Imperial and Soviet eras, highlighting their influence on Azerbaijan through various displays of personal belongings, documents, and artworks.

Significantly, the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan also dedicates sections to the political changes in the 20th century that dramatically shaped the nation’s current identity. This includes exhibitions on the oil boom and Azerbaijan’s eventual independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, which is a crucial aspect of its more contemporary history.

Visiting the National Museum of History of Azerbaijan not only offers a profound insight into the nation’s past but also serves as a testimony to the cultural richness and resilient spirit of the Azerbaijani people. This museum serves as an educational cornerstone for both locals and tourists, who are eager to understand the historical trajectory that has shaped modern Azerbaijan.
