Nizami Street, originally known as Nikolayevskaya Street during the Tsarist era, is one of Baku’s most charming and historically saturated avenues. Named in honor of the classical Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi on the 800th anniversary of his birth, this bustling pedestrian thoroughfare spans approximately 3.5 kilometers through the heart of Baku’s downtown area.
The street has played a pivotal role in the city’s cultural and social life, evolving through various historical epochs. It witnessed significant transformations from the oil boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, contributing to its architectural diversity, featuring splendid facades that blend European and Eastern styles.
During the Soviet period, it became a popular location for parades and public demonstrations, further sealing its status as a key urban gathering place.
Today, Nizami Street is lined with a myriad of high-end shops, theaters, cafés, and restaurants. The passage is also adorned with lush trees and ornate buildings that have been restored to their former glory, making it a picturesque site for both locals and tourists. Prominent landmarks on the street include the Nizami Cinema, named after the poet, and the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, adding to the cultural richness of the avenue.
